What Rome offers after dark
Rome at night is mostly an outdoor experience. The Pantheon closes at 19:00, with the last entry at 18:30. St. Peter's Basilica is listed open until 20:00. The Colosseum closes at 18:30 until 24 October 2026 and at 16:30 from 25 October 2026 to 28 February 2027, so in winter it is closed before dark.
What stays accessible is the street level: the fountains, the squares and the river. The Trevi Fountain remains visible from outside after the visiting hours end. That is enough for a good evening, if you plan the walk and know which doors are closed.

An evening walk in five stops
Walking times are model values without stops.
1. Trevi Fountain
Open from 11:30 on Monday and Friday and from 9:00 on the other days, with closing at 22:00. Last entry to the inner area is at 21:00. From outside, the fountain is free to see at any time. Coin tossing is allowed, and sitting on the basin edge is not. Trevi Fountain guide →
2. Spanish Steps
About 700 m and 8 minutes from Trevi. The steps are a public staircase with no entry fee. Sitting and eating on the steps are banned, so use them for the view and move on. Spanish Steps guide →
3. Piazza Navona
1.7 km and about 20 minutes from the steps. The square follows the outline of the ancient stadium and holds three main fountains. It is a public square, but the churches around it have their own hours. Piazza Navona guide →
4. The river
The Tiber embankments link the center with Trastevere. The sister guide covers Castel Sant'Angelo, which stands on the opposite bank.
5. Trastevere
1.3 km and about 15 minutes from Piazza Navona. End the walk on Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere. Trastevere guide →
The Pantheon is a daytime stop. It is 640 m and 7 minutes on foot from Trevi, so see it in the afternoon and come back to the fountain after dinner.
Our picks: Rome evening and night tours
Our take: the walk suits most visitors who want the lit squares at a walking pace. The e-bike ride covers more ground and can include dinner and wine, and the golf cart is the seated option if your legs are tired.

The Colosseum at night
The park offers a special night program, Una Notte al Colosseo 2026. It lasts about 60 minutes and covers the arena, the underground level and the first tier. It runs on Tuesday and Thursday from 20:00 to 23:00, the last start is at 21:50, and a group has a maximum of 25 people. Tickets are sold in advance, 7 days before, through the official online sale only. The price is €50 or €28 reduced (2026). For free-entry visitors the guided-visit share is €26, and children under 6 enter free. The ticket also includes one entry to the Forum and Palatine on the day before, the same day or the day after.
The dates are not clear. One city events overview lists the program from 14 July to 29 August 2026, while the park's own page names exceptions in September and October. Do not plan a trip around this program without checking the park's event page for your date. Winter evenings are not covered.
Evening tours compared

Do not count on the evening bus as a hop-on service. Treat it as a ride, not as transport between stops. The golf cart listing shows no price, so ask the operator. More on the golf cart page and the food tour page.
Getting around after dark
Public transport and cars both have limits at night.
Metro C
The opening announcement gave first and last trains as 5:30 and 23:30 from Sunday to Thursday, and 5:30 and 1:30 on Friday and Saturday. Hours can change temporarily, so check the current timetable. Metro C stops at Colosseo, with the B line interchange there.
Cars and taxis
The city center has a night traffic-restricted zone on Friday and Saturday from 23:00 to 03:00, suspended in August. In Trastevere the night restriction runs from 21:30 to 03:00 on Friday and Saturday, and from May to October on Wednesday and Thursday as well. Walking is simpler.
Safety
Stay on busy, lit routes after midnight and keep the last stretch of your walk short.
