Is a Rome hop-on hop-off bus worth it?
It depends on your day. The core sights are close together on foot, and a bus loop adds time for waiting, boarding and traffic. The bus helps most on the longer gaps and when you want a seat, an overview and a commentary between two timed visits.
Two operators publish passes for Rome, and their products differ in route, length and stops. This page does not rank them. It shows what the published ticket types look like in 2026 and what to check before you buy.

Big Bus tickets and prices
Prices seen in 2026, shown as from prices. Final prices depend on the date.
| Ticket | From price | Regular price from | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| One Day | €25 | €32 | A calendar-day product. It is a different product from the rolling 24-hour pass. |
| Discover 24 Hours | €29 | €37 | Valid for 24 hours from first use. |
| 48 hours | €34 | – | For a two-day trip. |
| 72 hours | €43 | – | For a three-day trip. |
| Discover Ticket + Colosseum | €61 | €71 | 24 hours of bus plus a timed entry to the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine. It is not a guided tour. |
These passes list the red route. The other operator, City Sightseeing, lists 24, 48 and 72 hour tickets together with the Omnia Bus Tours yellow line. Compare the exact variant, age group and duration on the operator page, because the overview prices do not map cleanly to a single adult 24-hour ticket.

What you can do on foot instead
Pure walking times without visits, queues or detours.
| Stretch | Distance | Walking time |
|---|---|---|
| Colosseum to Pantheon | 1.8 km | 21 minutes |
| Pantheon to Trevi Fountain | 640 m | 7 minutes |
| Trevi Fountain to Spanish Steps | 700 m | 8 minutes |
| Spanish Steps to Piazza Navona | 1.7 km | 20 minutes |
| Piazza Navona to Santa Maria in Trastevere | 1.3 km | 15 minutes |
Adding the five legs gives about 6 km and 71 minutes of walking. That is a sum of aggregator figures, not a measured route. The longest gaps are Colosseum to Pantheon and Spanish Steps to Piazza Navona, and those are where a bus or a metro ride saves the most. Pantheon, Trevi and the Spanish Steps sit within 15 minutes of each other.
When the bus makes sense
And when it does not.
Between two timed visits
If the Colosseum slot is at 9:30 a.m. and the next fixed visit is hours away, a bus gives you a seat and a view while you wait. It does not save time on the short central hops.
With the Colosseum bundle
The Discover Ticket + Colosseum costs from €61 (2026) and bundles a timed entry with 24 hours of bus. Compare it with buying the standard Colosseum ticket at €18 and a separate bus pass. See the page on the Colosseum for the ticket types.
Stops can be suspended
Operators publish service notices, and roadworks can close stops for long periods. In autumn 2026 City Sightseeing listed the Colosseo and Chiesa Nuova stops as suspended until further notice, and Chiesa Nuova is the stop nearest Piazza Navona. Do not count on a drop-off at the sight you want. Check the stop list and the notices on the day.
Trevi and the Spanish Steps
Do not plan on a bus stop at the Trevi Fountain or the Spanish Steps. Check the current stop list before you plan around one. The walk between the two is about 8 minutes, so a bus is rarely needed for that hop.
The public transport alternative
A single ticket (BIT) costs €1.50 and lasts 100 minutes. The Roma 24h costs €8.50, 48h €15 and 72h €22. Metro C reached the Colosseo and Fori Imperiali stop in December 2025, with a transfer to line B. There is no commentary, but the cost is a fraction of a bus pass.
In the evening
A one-hour panoramic night ride is advertised from €23 for adults, with departures at 8:20 and 8:30 p.m. It is a separate product, not a hop-on hop-off ticket. See Rome at night for more.
Rome at night →Other ways to see Rome
If a bus is not what you want.
A golf cart tour lists 3 hours for the center and a food tour lists 4 hours of walking and tastings. Both fit into a day.
Vatican City is a separate visit. See the Vatican City guide and the page on Vatican tours.

One Day is a calendar-day product. Discover 24 Hours runs for 24 hours from first use. They are different products with different prices.
Does the ticket include the Colosseum?
Only the combined Discover Ticket + Colosseum does. It lists from €61 and bundles 24 hours of bus with a timed entry to the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine.
