Why Trastevere comes last
Trastevere lies across the Tiber from the historic center. In a one-day plan it is the end of the route, not another sight to tick off. By late afternoon you have seen the big monuments, and this district is made for walking slowly and sitting down. The city's own fountain walk describes it as a district of cafes, restaurants and cocktail bars.
There is no ticket to book here and no entry slot to meet. That is the point. After a day of timed entries, Trastevere gives you a stretch with no schedule. Keep the Colosseum slot as the fixed point of the day and let the evening follow from it.

Two squares to aim for
Use a named square as the goal of your walk, not the whole district.
Piazza Trilussa
The square sits directly in front of Ponte Sisto, between Lungotevere della Farnesina and Lungotevere Raffaello Sanzio. It is the first stop when you cross the river on foot from the center, and a simple meeting point if your group splits up.
Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere
The square has the basilica of the same name and a fountain. It is a clear end point for the walk. Treat it as a single address, because Trastevere as a whole is too big to name as a meeting place.
The lanes in between
The streets between the two squares need no plan. Walk them without a route, and stop where a table is free.
Trastevere food and evening tours
Food walks, evening tours and day tours that include Trastevere, with live prices and availability.

Getting there from Piazza Navona
The walk from Piazza Navona to Santa Maria in Trastevere is 1.3 km. A route aggregator models it at 15 minutes of pure walking, so count on more with photo stops and slow crowds. Piazza Trilussa lies directly in front of Ponte Sisto, so crossing the river there puts you at the edge of the district.
If you prefer not to walk after a full day, check the current bus and tram timetable before you go. The ATAC day ticket for Rome costs €8.50 for 24 hours (2026), and a single BIT ticket costs €1.50 and lasts 100 minutes.
Do not plan to drive. The Trastevere traffic-restricted zone is active from Monday to Saturday between 6:30 and 10:00 in the morning (public holidays excepted). At night it applies on Friday and Saturday from 21:30 to 03:00, and from May to October also on Wednesday and Thursday. In August the night restriction is suspended. Unauthorized cars cannot enter during these windows.
Where the evening fits in the day
A suggested order, built around your Colosseum entry time. Walking times are model values without stops.
| Block | Stop | Walk to the next stop |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Colosseum and Forum | Colosseum to Pantheon: 1.8 km, 21 minutes |
| Midday | Pantheon | Pantheon to Trevi: 640 m, 7 minutes |
| Afternoon | Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps | Trevi to Steps: 700 m, 8 minutes. Steps to Navona: 1.7 km, 20 minutes |
| Early evening | Piazza Navona | Navona to Santa Maria in Trastevere: 1.3 km, 15 minutes |
| Evening | Trastevere | – |
The walking legs add up to about 71 minutes. Entry times, security checks and queues come on top. If the day runs late, drop the Spanish Steps stop first and keep Trastevere, because it is the one part that needs no entry time.
Dinner or a food tour
Trastevere has many places to eat, and this page does not rank them. Opening hours and kitchen hours differ by place, so check on the day before you walk across the river hungry. Prices are not covered here for the same reason.
If you would rather have the evening organized, a food tour is the simple option. One published evening tour, Twilight Trastevere, runs 4 hours with 6 stops for a maximum of 12 guests. Adults pay from €94, teenagers aged 13 to 17 from €85 and children aged 4 to 12 from €75 (2026). Tastings, drinks and a guide are included, and free cancellation is listed up to 24 hours before. Read more on the food tour page.

After dark and across the river
What else fits the same evening.
The Tiber embankments and the bridges make a short walk after dinner. Castel Sant'Angelo and the bridge in front of it are on the far side of the river, and the sister guide covers Castel Sant'Angelo in detail. The Vatican is a separate half day. Do not try to add it to this route. Things to do in Vatican City explains what it needs.
Trastevere: frequently asked questions
How do I get from Piazza Navona to Trastevere?
Walk. The distance is 1.3 km, and a route aggregator models 15 minutes of walking. Piazza Trilussa lies directly in front of Ponte Sisto, so the crossing there leads you to the edge of the district. Check the current timetable before you go if you want to use a bus or tram.
How long should I plan for Trastevere?
Plan the evening. There is no ticket or slot, so the time depends on your dinner. A food tour takes 4 hours. Add the 15-minute walk from Piazza Navona and your return trip.
Can I take a taxi into Trastevere?
The traffic-restricted zone applies from Monday to Saturday between 6:30 and 10:00 in the morning and at night on Friday and Saturday from 21:30 to 03:00, plus Wednesday and Thursday from May to October. It is suspended at night in August. Walking from Piazza Navona avoids the question.
Is Trastevere worth it if I only have one day in Rome?
It is the best way to end the day if your feet can manage it, because it needs no entry time. If you are tired, a seat on Piazza Navona gives you a similar evening with a shorter walk. Trastevere does not replace the Colosseum, the Pantheon or the Trevi Fountain.
Is the Vatican close to Trastevere?
It is on the other side of the river, but it is a separate visit. St. Peter's Basilica has its own queue and security check, so do not squeeze it into the same evening. The one-day route shows what has to be left out, and the sister guide covers St. Peter's Basilica on its own.
