The Trevi Fountain: two ways to see it

The Trevi Fountain has two parts. The square around it is open to everyone at any hour, and from there you see the whole fountain for free. Since 2 February 2026 the inner monument area, closer to the basin, requires a €2 ticket for visitors who are not exempt. That includes the first Sunday of the month, which is not free here.

For a one-day route this changes the planning. If a photo and a coin toss are enough, you do not need a ticket. If you want the closer position, buy the ticket and allow time for the entry. This site is independent and is not run by the city or the monument authority. Figures below are the 2026 values published by the authority and can change.

Opening hours

According to the access notice of 28 January 2026, the inner area is open from 11:30 to 22:00 on Mondays and Fridays, and from 09:00 to 22:00 on the other days. Last entry is 21:00 every day. The city's tourism portal gives 09:00 to 22:00 for every day, so the two sources differ on Mondays and Fridays. If your plan depends on a morning visit on those days, use the later time.

The authority also lists occasional exceptions with a later opening on single dates. Check the visit page for your date before you plan around an early arrival.

Outside these hours you can still see the fountain from the square for free. That does not give access to the roped-off inner area after closing time.

The coin toss and the rules

What is allowed at the basin.

The coin toss is allowed

The traditional toss is exempt from the ban on throwing objects into the fountain. Other objects are not covered by that exemption.

No eating, drinking or smoking

This applies at the fountain. Do not sit on the edge of the basin either.

Stay out of the water

Entering the basin or taking water from it is forbidden. The visitor site cites fines from €40 to €240 for some offenses and from €450 for climbing in or taking water. It refers to rules from 2016 and 2017, so treat the amounts as indicative.

No toilets or cloakroom

There are none at the fountain, so use facilities in a cafe or museum before you arrive.

Best times to visit

Official figures for crowds do not exist, so these are planning suggestions. The square is busiest when day-trip groups and evening strollers overlap. Early morning and the last hour before closing leave more space than midday. Older guides mention a limit of about 400 people at once from the 2024 reopening. Limits can change, so allow extra time at busy hours.

Seeing the fountain at night from the square costs nothing, so it also works as an evening stop after a long day. The inner area stays closed after the posted hours.
